Meagan Good reflects on her 2021 divorce from producer and writer DeVon Franklin on her first solo cover of Magazine Essence. The 41-year-old revealed the decision was something she “would never have ever chosen”.
Also, Good explained that after her divorce, she questioned celibacy. A subject she and Franklin prioritized during their courtship and even published a book about it.

Meagan Good opens up about the decision to divorce
During the interview with Essence, Good revealed that splitting from her husband of nine years wasn’t her decision.
“It’s not something I would have ever chosen and when I realized it was happening I was devastated. I said, ‘That’s me, Lord. I did everything I could do as best I could. I don’t understand why I did all these things and then this is my bottom line.’”
She added that the couple didn’t split either because she wasn’t ready to have children. Or because one of them was involved in “malicious” activities.

Additionally, the 41-year-old revealed that she was actually considering giving celibacy a second try — something she and Franklin published a book about. The Waiting: A Powerful Practice for Finding the Love of Your Life and the Life You Love.
According to a 2016 article published by NBC NewsFranklin felt that celibacy taught him the power of discipline, and Good credited the practice with giving her “needed time to heal.”
After the divorce, Good admitted that she “struggled” with the idea of making a second attempt at celibacy.
“I struggled with it. I said, ‘I don’t know if I should be celibate right now. I do not know what to do.’ In fact, I got to a point early on where I felt like I still obviously believe in Jesus, but I’m not sure what to believe about anything else.”
The couple’s divorce was finalized 7 days after their 10-year wedding anniversary
Accordingly beings, Good and Franklin’s divorce was finalized on June 23, 2022. The milestone came just seven days after their 10-year wedding anniversary.
During the interview, Good shared how the breakup affected her faith.
“That was tough because my biggest fear was what would have happened between my mum and dad, what would happen to me, that is, you’ve been with your husband for 10 years and you’re breaking up… It took me a long time to break that up.” to understand God did not divorce. DeVon and I both have free will. So I had to accept that God wasn’t lying when he told me this was my husband. The was my husband. But he didn’t say we’d be together forever…
Good went on to explain how her perspective on the unfortunate event changed.

The 41-year-old also revealed that she was “grateful” for the time she and Franklin had together. But now she’s looking forward to “starting life all over again” in her “best time.”
“Once I had accepted everything, I was grateful for the time together and the beautiful journey. Then there was excitement. I can start my life all over again, in my prime, with so many incredible things happening in my life and career. I have to do that again.”
Meagan Good & DeVon Franklin’s first filing for divorce and joint statement
As previously reported by The Shade Room, DeVon Franklin filed for divorce from Meagan Good in December 2021. The decision came after the couple had been married for nine years.
In a joint statement, reported by The Shade Room, the two explained that neither party was to blame for their split and that the two were looking forward to the next chapters in their lives.
“We are celebrating almost a decade of marriage together and an everlasting love. No one’s fault, we believe this is the next best chapter in our love’s evolution. We are incredibly grateful for the life changing years we have spent together as husband and wife. We are also very thankful to God for the testimony created in both of us and for blessing our lives together.”
