Marc Leishman leads at 11-under heading into final round at LIV Golf Tucson
Marc Leishman has a two shot lead over Sergio Garcia heading into the third and final round of LIV Gold Tucson.
Leishman opened Saturday with an eagle and held it together in the middle of his round for a five-under 66. The Aussie dropped just one shot at Gallery Golf Club and delivered a final birdie at the par-five 17 to make it 11-under.
“I got off to a really good start, then got cold on the back nine,” Leishman said. “But I didn’t let it get away from me.”
Garcia, whose last win anywhere was at Mississippi more than two years ago, shot a 65 that might have been a bit better if he hadn’t missed a two-foot putt for par on the 16th hole. At least he was able to finish with a birdie. on his last hole at number 17.
Garcia’s team, the Fireballs, have a one-shot lead in the team competition. “We’re there. We need another good day tomorrow,” Garcia said.
Sergio García is two shots behind the leader ahead of the final round
Louis Oosthuizen is in a group of four players at eight under par, although none of the others had as much of a provocation late in the round as the South African.
Finishing on the par four 18, Oosthuizen’s approach landed just a few feet from the flag and hit the pin, rolling backwards from a false front into the fairway. His birdie shot headed for the pin and spun in and out of the cup.
At that moment, he turned around and covered his face. She pared for a 68.
“He bowled exactly where I wanted, hit the pin and came off the green. Same look with the chip. I thought I should sign him,” Oosthuizen said. “I’m standing on the putt thinking, you better do this or it’s going to be a bad finish.”
He was joined by Charles Howell III (65), Brendan Steele (65) and Cameron Tringale (66), who never won on the PGA Tour before signing up to LIV Golf last season.
Phil Mickelson had a bogey-free round, making four birdies over an eight-hole stretch that led to a 67. He is tied for 10th, six shots off the lead. His team, which includes Steele, is a shot behind Garcia’s team.
