This new live-action film gives a new interpretation of a Disney classic while staying true to the animated film’s themes, characters and songs. And one thing Halle knew she couldn’t get rid of was Ariel’s iconic red hair! Now she’s talking about why she made the decision to keep her natural curls and still transform into a redhead. “It was super important for me to have my natural hair in this film,” Halle said Ebony Magazine. “I was really grateful [director] Rob Marshall for wanting to keep my locs. It’s always important to have someone to co-sign.” “I’ve had my curls since I was five, so they’re a big part of who I am. We have to be able to see ourselves” “We need to be able to see our hair on big screens like this so we know it’s beautiful and more than acceptable.” It also helped that Halle had a supportive team behind her that brought her vision to life, which included Halle’s hairstylist Camille friend and make-up artist Kat Ali. “[Ariel still] has red hair because that’s a very iconic part of her, but I really admired the fact because I’m a black woman and I have curly hair, [the producers] “I wanted to incorporate that into Ariel’s look,” Halle said Glamor Magazine. To achieve this look, Halle had her natural roots dyed red and coated her tresses in the same color you’ll see on screen. “They are [Camille and Kat] Both were women of color, so I felt very comfortable. They know how to take care of me, my hair and my makeup.
