Leader Scheffler said: “I want to win a lot of tournaments. With this being in my hometown, it would definitely be a lot of fun with the crowd behind me this weekend. But that’s not something that’s on a lot of my thoughts.”

“I don’t want to put too much emphasis on a tournament. I just want to go out there and do my best and see where that puts me.”

Palmer, who hasn’t won a PGA Tour event without a team since 2010, would be eligible for next week’s PGA Championship if he succeeds at the Byron Nelson, but says making that major is not his focus.

He said: “I would win this tournament and stay home next week, to be honest with you. That means more to me. If I get there next week, great, but winning on Tour is the hardest thing to do.”

“I would have no problem winning and staying at home and celebrating.”
